The Library invites you to travel across two cultures on an “unforgettable journey” in the library’s third annual One Book, One Town celebration in March 2010.
Librarians from Fairfield and Southport, including several community volunteers, worked together for several months, reading some of the best fiction and nonfiction, to select a book for this annual celebration. Finally, a book selection was made for 2010: Into the Beautiful North, by Luis Alberto Urrea.
The story is about Nayeli, a “twenty-first century female Don Quixote”(Library Journal) who, along with a few friends, embarks on a long journey from her home in Mexico to Kankakee, Illinois. Her quest is to find both her father and seven Mexican men who will return with her to Mexico to protect her town.
The author, Luis Alberto Urrea, will visit Fairfield on March 24 to speak about writing a Into the Beautiful North. Mr. Urrea has written 11 books and is an award-winning poet and essayist.
The Fairfield Public Library and Pequot Library, along with Borders Books and Music, the Fairfield Arts Council, the Fairfield Museum and History Center, Fairfield University, Fairfield Public Schools , and the Friends of the Fairfield Public Library are planning a month-long event filled with exciting programs for March 2010. Our plans include a lecture by Yale Professor, Dr. Mark Schenker, and Pequot Library Executive Director Dan Snydacker, craft programs for children, film programs, a dance demonstration, and more. A complete program calendar will be published in January.
Please stop by the Fairfield Main Library, Fairfield Woods Branch Library, or Pequot Library to pick up a copy of this wonderful book, or purchase a copy at Borders. Also, for the first time, we are proud to announce we will also have copies of this book in the Spanish language.
