Author, freelance writer,  aspiring screenplay writer Charlie Slack returns to the Library to share his thoughts on sustaining a career as a writer in these challenging economic times.

Slack is the author of several books. Hetty: The Genius and Madness of America’s First Female Tycoon, based on the life of female Wall Street Pioneer Hetty Green, was published in November 2004 by Ecco Press (HarperCollins). Hetty won the 2005 Connecticut State Book Award for Biography from the Connecticut Center for the Book. Noble Obsession (Hyperion, 2002), was based on the life of inventor Charles Goodyear. The New York Public Library named Noble Obsession one of the 25 best “Books to Remember” for 2002. Blue Fairways (Henry Holt, 1999) was an American journey based on a trip down the East Coast from Maine to Florida, one public golf course at a time. It was a finalist for the United States Golf Association’s International Book Award. His newest book, The Profit of Courage, co-authored with Richard Levick, is about crisis leadership and will be published in 2010.

Slack is currently completing an original screenplay. He has been a full-time free lancer since 1998. His mainstream journalism has appeared in Esquire, Reader’s Digest, Fortune Small Business, and other national publications. He has written and edited business and financial articles for a wide number of clients including Time Inc., Merrill Lynch, Bank of America, American Express, Mercer, Citigroup, Wachovia, CR Bard, United Parcel Service, and others.

Slack was a newspaper reporter in Virginia and Tennessee before turning to free lance writing. As a reporter for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, he was named first place in business writing in Virginia in 1996 by the Virginia Press Association.

He is a graduate of Harvard University. He lives in Trumbull, CT with his wife, Barbara, and his daughters, Natalie and Caroline.
